Church Vicar finally sacked over Fayemi’s N5m donation

Church Vicar finally sacked over Fayemi’s N5m donation
St Pauls Millennium Anglican Church

Gov. Kayode Fayemi
The crisis rocking St Paul’s Millennium Anglican Church in Odo-Owa Ekiti in Ekiti State over the N5 million donated by Governor Kayode Fayemi has taken another dimension with the compulsory retirement of the church’s vicar, Rev Michael Ogunniyi. This is despite the threats and protests by members of the church that the rank of the cleric, who had earlier been demoted from Archdeacon to Canon by the Anglican Bishop of Ekiti West Diocese, Most Rev Oludare Oke, should be restored.
It will be recalled that the crisis began when the cleric, in defiance of the order of the Anglican Bishop that the N5 million donated by Governor Fayemi during the burial of the former Anglican Primate, Most Rev Abiodun Adetiloye, should be kept in a special fixed account, saying it was an endowment fund and not a gift to the Odo-Owa church alone.
But some members disagreed with the bishop and prevailed on Rev Ogunniyi to use the money to buy a new bus for evangelism and for renovation of the church.
The church consequently bought a new bus for N3 million, spent N1 million on renovation and kept the remaining N1 million in bank. This consequently earned the vicar a demotion.
In a statement yesterday, the Diocesan Communicator Emeritus Dr Kunle Olasope and Diocesan Communicator Prince Sola Adetule, said the Bishop had on March 1, 2013 handed over a letter of compulsory retirement with six months’ notice to the cleric.
The statement reads: “The question of Vicar Ogunniyi is strictly a matter of discipline which must be maintained if the person, position and authority of the bishop are not to be rubbished and dragged in the mud”.
The diocese also allayed the fear of demotion of the Odo Owa church from archdeaconry as it announced the Dean of the Cathedral, Very Revd Julius Olaosebikan, as supervisor of the church until Rev Ogunniyi would bow out.
The vicar, who was originally billed to retire in 2017, said he had accepted the compulsory retirement, adding that he did not regret the action.”
He told journalists on phone yesterday that “the matter is all about purchase of the bus which the church had been longing for in the past 15 years. My loyalty is to the church and not to the bishop. I have no regret”.
Ogunniyi, however, advised members of the church not to engage any violent act because of the bishop’s action.
Some members of the Provincial Church Council (PCC) had last week threatened that they would sue the bishop if he did not restore the rank of the vicar, adding that they might be compelled to move out of Ekiti Anglican West Diocese.
But the Diocese, which said the board had passed vote of confidence in the bishop for the effective way he has run the affairs of the diocese, added: “As for those who threaten court action at Odo Owa, they are entitled to their rights, but the Diocese will not be deterred”.'ve got to love this Nigeria's power couple in these romantic and playful pics that will be used for souvenirs and backdrop at the reception of their white wedding in Dubai which is just three away.

As a result of Tuesday’s disturbance at the Ogun State House of Assembly, heavy presence of police personnel was noticed in and around the premises of the House on Wednesday morning. The well armed mobile policemen who stood on guard prevented legislators from entering. Only staff of the House were allowed in to the offices and that was after they had been subjected to thorough screening.  Violence broke out after four members of the House were suspended. The members however rejected the suspension and subsequently announced the suspension of the Speaker, Hon Suraj Adekunbi and the election of another Speaker, Remi Hassan who incidentally was one of those who had earlier been suspended. In the fracas that followed, the mace which is the symbol of authority was broken. We  also gathered that the House is presently polarized with 13 members on each side and both sides have written to the police to notify the law enforcement agents of the suspension of some members. Street Journal’s calls to the PRO of the Ogun State police command were unanswered at the time of filing this report. It was also gathered that the Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has scheduled a meeting with the lawmakers

Two Nigerians, Sunny Ekecukwu Beji Eke, 53 and James Elekechukwu, 47 have been apprehended in connection with the importation of 200 kg of cocaine with an approximated street value of $ 12 million.

The arrest of the two Nigerian businessmen was preceded by the seizure of the drugs by the Narcotic Control Board (NACOB). The seizure has been described as the biggest in recent times in the West African country’s Tema Harbour. Street Journal gathered that the illicit substance was carefully concealed in a 40-foot container with the number MRK 257478-45 GI laden with 1,946 boxes of shampoo imported from Bolivia. Nii Lante Blankson, the Deputy Executive Secretary of NACOB disclosed that an intelligence report was received last December that a cargo said to contain cosmetics was heading for Tema Harbour and that the said cargo was also suspected to contain some narcotics.
He stated that when the container docked at Tema on January 29, NACOB officials immediately mounted surveillance on it and when a clearing agent showed up after two weeks with the necessary papers to clear the goods, he was promptly arrested to aid investigations. According to the NACOB Deputy Executive Secretary, the cargo was originally built to contain 22 pallets of different cosmetics but when it was examined, it was found to contain 1,946 cartons, 33 of which contained 198 yellow bottles of cocaine while 29 others contained 174 green bottles of cocaine.
The container was subsequently traced to Elekechukwu who was arrested in his house near Welja. He however opened up on interrogation that the container actually belonged to Chief Eze, who he said was his classmate and friend.
Findings have also revealed that Chief Eke’s company, De Consumables Company was allegedly registered using fake documents. Eze was arrested at the Accra Shopping Mall during a meeting with the clearing agent and Elekechukwu after being carefully lured to Ghana. Four Nigerian passports with different names were found in his possession.
